Top 10 FPS Games of the 20th Century

First-Person Shooters were born on the PC and if you ask me that's where they should stay. With very little success on consoles (GoldenEye and Metroid Prime being the only exceptions), it looks like the PC will continue to be the haven for fragfests. (And if you think Halo should be on this list then you'll really dislike my Top 10.) Some of these titles appeared in my Top 10 PC Games of the 20th Century list so if you want the text and video for those then head on over there, otherwise, enjoy the box art. If you want to see some more modern shooters click on over to my Top 10 FPS Games of the 21st Century.

10 Shadow Warrior
(1997) - Yet another Duke Nukem 3D styled crazy FPS. This time with ninjas and even more puzzle elements. But still sticking firmly to the action genre.

9. Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold (1993) - This little known title based on the Wolfenstein 3D engine, added a few new elements such as innocents into the mix. A sold game thats more than just a maze.

8. Wolfenstein 3D (1992) - The true start of the FPS genre. Who thought mazes full of bad guys could be so fun.

7. Blood (1997) - A fair amount of gore and humor in this gruesome title but even more amounts of Duke Nukem 3D style fun.

6. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (1997) - We knew the Star Wars franchise would pay off eventually. Jedi Knight showed us the universe through the eyes of a Jedi (Force powers included)

5. Duke Nukem 3D (1996) - Coming out after Doom, Duke 3D showed us some new things on the tech side and did it with a good sense of macho humor.

4. Unreal Tournament (1999) - The first in what would be come one of the greatest competitive FPS games. This set the stakes for the rest. High speed and over-the-top online gameplay.

3. Doom (1993)

2. Quake
(1996)

1. Half-Life
(1998)
